For many athletes and families, the assumption is that the “top team” at any club is the only place where true development and opportunities happen. But at MVSA, the experience on our second or third teams often surpasses what athletes gain on the so-called “top team” at competing clubs. Here’s why.  Read More

Competitive Success Speaks for Itself

Our second teams regularly defeat the top teams of other clubs, and our third teams compete at that same level. The training environment, culture, and coaching quality ensure that every athlete — regardless of team placement — develops at a high level. Choosing our second or third team isn’t a step down; it’s a chance to be part of a program that consistently delivers impressive results.

To see for yourself, check team rankings on AES by going to https://www.advancedeventsystems.com/rankings, select "SportsEngine AES Power Rankings", “Female”, and then choose a division (age group). On the resulting "Power Rankings" page select “Chesapeake (CH)” as the region and an appropriate "historical season" (i.e., 2024-2025). Finally, check "Show National Ranks". You can compare the performance of our teams to other clubs you are considering.

Guaranteed Playing Time

One of our core values is development through experience, and that means every player gets meaningful playing time. Unlike many top-team rosters where athletes may sit on the bench for long stretches, our players are on the court learning, competing, and growing their confidence. Volleyball is a game best learned by playing, not watching.  At MVSA, we guarantee at least 25% playing time in pool play so that all athletes get tournament experience.

Smaller Rosters = More Individual Attention

At MVSA, most of our teams intentionally cap their roster at 10 athletes. Compare that to the 12 or more that many clubs carry. This means more touches in practice, more direct coaching feedback, and more opportunities to shine in matches. Every athlete is known, valued, and challenged daily.

A Focus on Development, Not Just Winning

While we value competition and play to win, our philosophy is rooted in long-term player growth. By emphasizing skill development, decision-making, and volleyball IQ, we prepare our athletes not just for the next tournament, but for their entire playing future — whether that’s high school varsity, college, or beyond. We have had a number of players who began their volleyball journey on our second or third 15s or 16s teams who went on to play NCAA Division 1.

For anyone concerned that playing on a second or third team may hurt their chances at being recruited to play in college, the JVA spoke with college coaches about that very topic. Check it out, it is definitely worth a read.

Greater Value, Lower Cost

We believe elite training shouldn’t come with an elite price tag. Our families consistently find that our program offers better coaching, more playing opportunities, and stronger competition, at a lower cost than competing clubs.

A Positive Team Culture

Because of our size and approach, athletes on our second and third teams form closer bonds with coaches and teammates. The supportive, competitive, and fun environment is one where players thrive, both on and off the court.

The Bottom Line

Being on the “top team” of another club might sound appealing — but what does that experience actually deliver? If it means limited playing time, oversized rosters, higher costs, and less competitive success, then it may not be the best path.

At MVSA, second and third teams don’t just hold their own against the competitionthey often surpass them. Most importantly, every athlete receives the attention, training, and opportunities they deserve.

For families who want their daughters to truly play, learn, and grow, choosing our second or third team is often the smartest choice they can make.
