Roger W. Heald moved to Montgomery Village in 1988 and co-founded the Montgomery Village Sports Association Volleyball program with Roger Stewart in 1991. The program was started as a youth recreational league and was expanded to include club volleyball affiliated with USA Volleyball (formerly USVBA) in 1993 with a single team. Roger assumed the role of Club Director in 1995 and oversaw the growth of the organization to its current size of 22 Club teams, 32 Rec teams, and an outdoor summer program all serving local athletes from 10 to 18 years of age.

Extraordinarily, Roger recruited, convinced, cajoled, persuaded, and coordinated enough adult coaches, assistant coaches, and administrators to accomplish this growth using 100% volunteer support. This is the primary reason that MVSA Volleyball is an inclusive organization and able to provide so many youth sport participation opportunities to a wide cross section of local families. MVSA consistently qualifies teams in multiple age groups to compete in the USA Volleyball National Championships representing the best of each region from across the country. Countless players have continued their volleyball passion to play collegiately but Roger never stressed that as a primary goal, but to focus on academics.

It is difficult to accurately quantify the impact of Roger’s service but this year alone, MVSA Volleyball will serve approximately 500 young athletes. It is safe to say that over the last 30 years, the organization has served thousands of youths and been supported by hundreds of adult volunteers totaling hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours.

In addition to his service as Club Director and founder, Roger has been a coach of a club team every season and also served the USA Volleyball Chesapeake Region in the capacity of Board Member, Ethics Chair, and pro bono legal counsel. For his decades of service, USA Volleyball has recently awarded Roger with the 2021 Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award “for contributing outstanding participation, motivation, and other services in the promotion of volleyball.” He also served on the Montgomery Village Sports Association Board and has never received compensation for any volleyball services as coach, director, etc. for the club or for the region.

Now the retired attorney is able to spend more time with his wife, kids, and grandkids after sacrificing so much time in his 30 years of service to Montgomery Village, Montgomery County, and the entire Chesapeake Region.

On behalf of our entire volleyball community... thank you Roger!
