Fight Back with Fitness Invitational Hosted by MVSA

March 2012

The March 25th MVSA Fight Back with Fitness Invitational was a huge success.  MVSA raised over $9700 for pediatric cancer research.  WACO Tornadoes raised the most with $2721 and walked away with the warm-up jackets donated by Mizuno.  In second place was MVSA Starz with $1547 in donations.  You can see how the rest of the teams did at www.FightBackwithFitness.org.  All proceeds go to the Jake Wetchler Foundation for Innovative Pediatric Research.  Photos can be seen on the Fight Back with Fitness Facebook page.

FIGHT BACK AGAINST PEDIATRIC CANCER

March 2012

No child’s life should be lost to cancer – and yet cancer is the #1 cause of children’s disease-related death. To fight back, MVSA has designated the March 25th MVSA Invitational as a Fight Back with Fitness tournament to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Teams are invited to sign up, raise some funds, and have fun while helping an important cause. All proceeds go to fund leading-edge research through The Jake Wetchler
Foufbf-pic.jpgndation for Innovative Pediatric Cancer Research. Jake was the cousin of Hott Shots setter Lauren Singer.

Go to www.FightBackWithFitness.org to sign up or to support your favorite team. All participating teams will receive a Fight Back with Fitness wrist band. Teams that raise over $1000 will be given t-shirts and the team that raises the most money to fight pediatric cancer will receive warm-up jackets donated by Mizuno.

MVSA Growing our 12s

January 2012

Montgomery County, and the greater Washington D.C. area in general, are experiencing a sustained increase in the number of young women (and young men) interested in the sport of volleyball. The recent rise of new volleyball clubs in the Chesapeake Region (and the number of teams per club) is clear evidence that this is happening on a regional basis. In 2011, we saw this growth on a more local level in both the MVSA fall recreational league and in tryouts for the MVSA Junior Olympic Club program.

growing12sb.jpegThis fall the MVSA recreational league had the largest number of teams in our history - we had over 200 athletes on 22 teams. Those teams were organized into three leagues based on age and experience. The six teams in our 4th-6th grade league was the highest total to date and played a significant role in attracting 57 girls to the 12 and under club tryouts.

In an attempt to support the greater demand for club volleyball, MVSA expanded our 12s program to four teams and offered positions to a total of 38 athletes. That expansion could only have taken place with a commitment to additional practice time and a larger coaching staff. We were fortunate that several of the athletes had parents with significant playing and coaching experience. This year we have two experienced coaches for each of our four 12s teams. We also have a technical director for our 12s program to ensure we focus on the fundamentals and basic systems in a consistent manner.

In addition to the rise in the number of athletes we also saw a rise in the level of talent. The 12 and under tryouts were extremely competitive and the selection process was very difficult. We had more than a dozen players with at least one full year of club volleyball experience. The majority of the athletes had played in one or more recreational leagues – either with MVSA or in Gaithersburg or Frederick. Two of our youngest players, 4th graders and less than 5’ tall, were consistently serving overhand bullets that were out of bounds long!

MVSA continues to be one of the strongest clubs in the region and our future looks bright with this latest influx of talented athletes and a dedicated coaching staff!

Congratulations our MVSA Athletes!
